Second show, broadcast Dec 5
Our second show had the theme of the working man- songs about coal miners, farmers, people down on their luck... enjoy !
We broad cast our second show with the theme "the working man". The songs told stories of working for the union, working on the railroad or the farm, travelling around looking for work, or being out of work. We hope to get across the sense of being an honest, hard working, blue collar person, sometimes just barely managing to get by. The set opens with one of the most moving images, the song "Miners Refrain" by Gillian Welch, one of our favorite bluegrass singers. This was followed by a set of railroad songs, including "Railroad Bill", which is about a man running from the law. Then we played a few blues oriented songs, such as "I am weary, let me rest," and "Man of constant sorrow", both from the O Brother Where Art Thou movie soundtrack. Another of our favorites was John Prine’s "Christmas in Prison", about dreaming of a better day. We recommend a couple of albums for you to check out. First, "Classic African American Ballads" a compilation on Folkway Records. Second, Woody Guthrie’s "Dustbowl Ballads", which is full of songs of struggling to get by on a poor paying job or no job at all. Hope you enjoyed the show ! Next week’s theme is "train songs"...
